Danish filter removes pollution from ships - Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

Posted - September 3, 2013 -   Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

99 percent of all fine particles and 40 percent of NOx emissions is rinsed away with an integrated system for ships with diesel engines. But the Danish team behind the invention are lacking investors. They are in search of 20 million Danish kroner to afford a production plant on the island Bornholm.
"Our goal is to produce and deliver integrated emission filters for ships worldwide. Primarily for ships operating in coastal waters - globally there are 28,000 ships with diesel engines", says engineer Klaus Rasmussen, who is behind the investment presentation of the new filter.
Every year, two million people die due to fine particulate air pollution. Particle filters for cars and trucks are already on the market, but not for the shipping industry. Ship’s diesel engines are responsible for 25,000 deaths a year alone in the Mediterranean.
That is what a Danish entrepreneur group wants to change. They have developed a clean-tech solution that strikes three birds with one stone. Its installation can eliminate 99 percent of fine particles from smoke, cut 40 percent off NOx emissions while also dampening noise from the engine by between 35-65 dB.
Behind the invention is Captain Kai Brodersen and Lars Frederiksen, former board member for Notox, who developed the technology. The unique thing about the filter is that it should not be fed liquid urea like competing systems.
"The filter is passive, which means that it operates without the addition of urea. So there is no cost of operation and maintenance is limited to cleaning the filter once a year. In addition, the catalyst that reduces NOx emissions runs on a heating of 250 degrees where most others require 350 degrees", says Klaus Rasmussen, who owns the consulting firm Moving Energy.
