Analysis: LNG Best Near Future Bunker Alternative - Ship & Bunker

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the best "near future" marine fuel alternative, according to an analysis of the Finnish international marine transport industry that included the creation of an optimal future vessel concept.
The research, done as part of three Master's theses at Aalto University, found that energy efficiency and vessel flexibility will be crucial for the industry in coming years.
Changes in Finnish trade patterns, with an increased focus on the export of value-added and niche products instead of mass-produced products, means cargo vessels must be flexible enough to carry a variety of products and handle rapid changes in types of cargo.

The vessel conceptualisation was supported by the "Laiva 2025" report compiled by the Centre for Maritime Studies at the University of Turku as part of a cooperative project involving industry and academic partners.
With LNG bunkering a subject of much discussion, Fathom recently provided a status report on the fuel's commercial feasibility, political risk, and market factors.
