General Motors, Method Products and Novelis are among the latest
seven US businesses to sign a statement urging federal policymakers to
take action on climate change, calling it “one of America’s greatest economic opportunities of the 21st century.”
The additional four new Climate Declaration signatories are 3D design software firm Autodesk, Burton Snowboards, Eastern Bank and natural cosmetics company Lush.
Ceres’ Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP)
coalition organized the campaign, originally endorsed by 33 businesses —
including Nike, Starbucks and Ikea — and launched last month.
The Climate Declaration has now been signed by 40 businesses that
collectively provide about 550,000 US jobs and generate a combined
annual revenue of about $611 billion, BICEP says.
Michael J. Robinson, GM vice president of sustainability and global
regulatory affairs, says a national energy policy that emphasizes energy efficiency and renewables will compliment companies’ sustainability efforts and help reduce carbon emissions.
In early April, GM said it will invest about $332 million in four manufacturing sites to produce more fuel-efficient
engines and transmissions. The company has committed to achieving a 20
percent reduction per vehicle in global CO2 footprint by 2020.
Extreme weather events like last summer’s drought and Hurricane Sandy
have affected several of the Climate Declaration signatories and
exposed the US’ economic vulnerability to climate change, the companies
say.
BICEP members have supported several climate-driven policies, including automotive fuel efficiency standards signed into law in 2012 and the extension of the wind power tax credit.
